Roughly 140 years earlier, those children had been some of the first sent to government-run boarding schools that were meant to forcibly assimilate Native youth into dominant white culture. Conditions were bleak, and students were routinely subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. As the caravan passed through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, it stopped in Native communities along the way so others could pay their respects.
