Students were punished for speaking their languages or practicing their culture, and subjected to widespread abuse. From 2008 to 2015, Canada convened a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate the legacy of the schools, including interviewing some of the 80,000 living survivors of the system. This photo shows a circle of Dene elders in prayer in Beauval, Saskatchewan, on the morning of one of the final commission listening sessions.
