案例简介：Photo by @dzalcman / Eric Lapointe tends to the graves of his relative Alvan, one of nine Rosebud Sioux children who were returned to their homeland in South Dakota last month—after 140 years of being buried on the grounds of what was once the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. The nine children—Dennis Strikes First (Blue Tomahawk), Rose Long Face (Little Hawk), Lucy Take The Tail (Pretty Eagle), Warren Painter (Bear Paints Dirt), Ernest Knocks Off (White Thunder), Maude Little Girl (Swift Bear), Alvan (Kills Seven Horses), Friend Hollow Horn Bear, and Dora Her Pipe (Brave Bull)—were among the earliest wave of Native children sent to Carlisle, the first of hundreds of government boarding schools meant to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children into white, western culture. Conditions were bleak, and students were routinely exposed to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. About 200 Native children died during the 39 years that Carlisle operated, and most were buried on the school grounds—now a U.S. Army barracks.
