Roughly 140 years earlier, those children had been some of the first sent to government-run boarding schools that were meant to forcibly assimilate Native youth into dominant white culture. Conditions were bleak, and students were routinely subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. A group of Lakota youth were responsible for tirelessly lobbying for nearly six years for this return, accompanying the remains of the children to their traditional homeland last month.
