Conservation easements have protected several ranches to the north and south in perpetuity, securing this portion of the Florida Wildlife Corridor for panthers and other wildlife. Panthers need to be able to safely cross roads to move from protected lands in the south to new territory in the north. Collisions with vehicles are their leading cause of death. Wildlife crossings like this can reduce those losses, but can only be built when habitat corridors are already protected on both sides of the road.This photo was taken using infrared light, outside the visible spectrum, to avoid disturbing the cats. The camera system was funded by a donation from the @fstopfoundation.From "Return of the Panther," by @Douglas_Main, in the April issue of National Geographic.
