Photo by @carltonward / Roads foster suburban development, such as this new neighborhood near Orlando that cuts into historic panther habitat close to Interstate 4. The Florida 2070 study projects that an additional five million acres (two million ha)—and most of the unprotected connections within what's known as the Florida Wildlife Corridor—will be developed in the next 50 years, unless major investments in land conservation steer construction closer to existing urban areas. Current sprawling development patterns are consuming an average of 100,000 acres of rural and natural land each year—to accommodate nearly 1,000 new residents moving to Florida every day.Path of the Panther is supported by the National Geographic Society, working to inspire the conservation of the Florida Wildlife Corridor—the statewide network of public preserves and private farms, ranches, and forests that the panther needs to survive. @PathofthePanther @insidenatgeo #FloridaWildlifeCorridor #KeepFLWildPlease see the full story "Return of the Panther," written by @douglas_main, for @natgeo available online and on newsstands later this month.Check out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
