We’re continuing to embrace the incredible craft of African and Caribbean cloth weavers through our series of designs inspired by their beautiful work. The Bogolan or Bògòlanfini (meaning mud cloth), a fabric from African and Caribbean cloth weavers, is still as present today as it was in the 12th century. It is made with natural mud fermented in jars for a year and mashed N’gallama tree leaves to give it a unique yellow dye colour. Historically, the natural hues of the Bogolan cloth lent themselves well to hunters as camouflage for protection. For babies and mothers, this fabric was also believed to shield against dangerous forces. Today, the people of Mali have proudly adopted this Queen of sustainable fabric as a cultural marker.
