Thousands of South Sudanese fled their villages because of ongoing fighting between government and rebel forces, leaving behind their crops, harvest, homes, and food supplies while seeking shelter in Nyal, in the Sudd swamplands, largely surrounded by small islands and marshy, low-lying lands. For March, women's history month, we celebrate women around the world for their strength and resilience.
