The “Art Never Forgets” project wants to bring the tragedy at Mariana (MG) back to the public debate. In an initiative created by AlmapBBDO, the Panamericana School of Art and Design sent alumnus and visual artist Marcelo Tolentino to visit the mud-ravaged region and hear the stories of those who lost everything in the largest environmental catastrophe in the history of Brazil. The mud that devastated the city is being transformed into art, taking the form of portraits of the victims of Mariana. Accompanied by photographer Alex Takaki, Marcelo went to the site of the tragedy, met the victims and collected the mud that had decimated the local ecosystem and wreaked havoc on the lives of those living in Mariana. With this material, he started the process of reproducing the faces of those personally impacted by the avalanche of mud. In an attempt to make sure that the works made it to the right audience, the portraits are on display along the streets of Brasília, in a sort of open-air exhibition not far from Congress. That way, the politicians who missed the last two sessions of the parliamentary commission in the Chamber of Deputies set to discuss the tragedy at Mariana (both sessions were canceled for a lack of quorum) can be reminded of the tragedy, which will never be erased from the memories of its victims. “Art Never Forgets” reinforces the role of art in recording and translating tragic moments in the history of humanity, such as was the case with Picasso’s painting Guernica, recalling the bombing of the city of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The initiative seeks not only to revive the discussion around Mariana, but also find a place in History for the images and identities of those who will have to put their lives back together and have not found real support from those tasked to act in the wake of the greatest environmental disaster of 2015.
