Photo by @jasperdoest / Earlier this month, my daughter, Fleur, 7, and I found a dead finch while walking just outside the city where we live in the Netherlands. Fleur wanted to bury her, but since I didn't know what caused her death, I didn't want to carry her in my bare hands. We decided to take her in the only item we carried in our pockets—a disposable face mask (carried as a backup in case we forget our reusable ones). When we got home, we put her on the ground, and Fleur suggested we use the face mask as a blanket until we dug a hole. I was deeply touched by her idea—especially since many of these discarded masks, which helped save lives during the pandemic, are also proving a deadly hazard for wildlife and littering their habitat. I felt the need to take some time and work on a photograph to honor this beautiful bird and Fleur's empathic gesture.
