That’s enough time to travel, hypothetically, round trip to Mars. To this day, she holds the record for more hours in space than any other American, and any other woman in the world. At age 57, she was the oldest female astronaut in space when, in June 2017, she broke the record for longest space flight by a woman, having spent 289 days in orbit on Soyuz-MS-04. She held that record until February 2020, when it was broken by Christina Koch. She was the first female astronaut to command the International Space Station, which she did twice. She also holds the record for total spacewalks by a woman (10). Whitson retired on June 15, 2018. A biochemistry researcher by trade, Whitson built an enviable career and is considered the most experienced astronaut in U.S. history. She remains one of my photography subjects who I most admire.
