Nichols often handles Hebrew and Arabic texts, especially those part of genizah collections. The department is responsible for the preservation and conservation of the collections at the library, covering mainly special collections. The Conservation and Collection Care Department is made up of a team of five conservators. They all share responsibility of the general welfare of the collections but focus on individual projects as well. The process of conservation of manuscripts involves gentle dry-cleaning, repairing tears, and stabilizing inks. Afterward the documents are encapsulated in Melinex.
