Males normally lose, but the cub’s mother, dubbed Palazzo (upper left), is higher ranking than Mickey, and cubs inherit the rank of their mother. Observing their mother’s behavior can help teach cubs their place in hyena society; just 5 minutes before I took this photo, Palazzo had aggressively chased Mickey away from the den (see photos 2 and 3). That may have inspired this cub’s show of dominance when Mickey tried to creep back into the group.Nat Geo editor @christinedellamore writes, “Though cubs of both sexes inherit the rank of their mother, they fall lower in the hierarchy as new siblings are born.
