案例简介：Photos by @carltonward / What do these two species have in common? The Florida black bear and Florida scrub jay are both threatened by the same issue—habitat loss and fragmentation. Black bears once lived in every Florida county but have been relegated to seven increasingly isolated subpopulations, from the western panhandle near Pensacola to the southern Everglades near Naples. Scrub jay populations have declined nearly 90 percent during the past century due to loss and fragmentation of the scrub habitat on which they depend. Now most of the jay populations are becoming inbred as they become increasingly isolated (the third photo shows a housing development pushing up against a scrub preserve). The good news is that there is still time to revive both of these species. The path to recovery includes identifying and conserving wildlife corridors. By protecting a connected network of compatible habitats, we can restore genetic exchange among black bears and scrub jays in much of Florida. And conserving farms and ranches is part of the solution. A recent study from @archboldstation showed that patches of scrub separated by ranchlands can function as one connected habitat, but jays in patches of scrub separated by housing developments become genetically divided.
