The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is working to determine the cause, which could be an environmental toxin or a pathogen. Susceptibility to localized pollution or disease is one reason the Florida panther range needs to expand across more of Florida and the southeastern U.S., giving the subspecies a better chance of recovering from its endangered status.First image: Lara Cusack and Mark Lotz take blood samples from a panther kitten at Corkscrew Swamp that had been exhibiting signs of FLM on camera footage. The kitten received a complete veterinary examination and was released back to the wild. Next: A male Florida panther kitten struggles to get back on its feet after losing control of its hind legs–a sign of the FLM neurological disorder. After conducting an MRI scan at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital, technician Des Muir transports a sleeping panther kitten. Scans focused on the spinal cord and brain of the panthers, where the neurological signs of FLM can be evident. Four: As biologists continued to monitor this symptomatic female, she produced two kittens. Unlikely to survive, they were all captured and removed from the wild. The mother had suffered irreparable damage associated with FLM and was euthanized. Her brain and spinal tissue were studied by an international team of experts to try to determine the cause of the disorder.
