Photo by @isadorakosofsky / Carlos holds his son, Damian, during a parent-child bonding visit at the Everglades Re-entry Center in Miami, Florida, where Carlos is incarcerated. This is part of a long-term series documenting the quarterly meetings between children and their incarcerated parents at twelve women’s and men’s prisons in Florida. According to the Casey Foundation, more than 1.7 million children in the U.S. have an incarcerated parent, and approximately 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives. Nationally, there are more than 120,000 incarcerated mothers and 1.1 million incarcerated fathers who are parents of minor children. Research reveals that children who have consistent contact with an incarcerated parent have better mental health and are more socially engaged. Children of Inmates, an organization dedicated to bringing incarcerated families together, facilitates these visits, which include physical interaction, game playing, singing, and gift giving. This program differs from conventional visits, as it is a bonding experience. Volunteers help instruct the parents to get into full mommy or daddy mode.Currently, due to the pandemic, in-person visitation has been suspended at the majority of prisons in the United States.
