This past summer, Bristol Bay experienced the largest return of sockeye salmon in a century of recordkeeping. With over 66 million sockeye returning, this was the third record-breaking salmon run in the past decade. Another record run is forecast for 2022. While salmon stocks have been negatively impacted by warming waters in other parts of North America in recent years, scientists believe that warmer winters in Bristol Bay may actually be improving food supplies and habitat for salmon during their first years of life upriver.
