This feeling of authenticity was key to making the idea work – so the subtitles appear to subvert the ‘original’ film. The actors were directed to perform the Pirandello dialogue in a period style without awareness of how it would be manipulated and subverted by the eventual subtitles. The goal being that the performance is sufficiently melodramatic that adding the subtitles about ‘Harvey Nichols’ telegraphs comedically.
