The machine pictured here uses an electron beam to fuse together a unique material called titanium aluminide (TiAl). TiAl is 50% lighter than nickel-based alloys, so parts can be made lighter and more efficient. GE Aviation is using this technique to build parts for its most powerful jet engine.
