案例简介：Background In Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula deforestation and poaching have decimated the spider monkey population. A keystone species of the rainforest, spider monkeys are responsible for seed dispersion, which maintains biodiversity and sustains the environment for all animals. Rainforest Connection, an NGO established in 2011, wanted to be able to effectively monitor the spider monkeys to focus conservation efforts. Describe the creative idea The density of the rainforest means that you can’t see very far, making the visual tracking of animals almost impossible – but sounds can travel great distances. Based on this insight we created a bio-acoustic monitoring system using recycled cellphones that track the spider monkey by recognizing its many different calls. Describe the strategy Our approach was a collaboration between Rainforest Connection and Huawei, with bio-acoustics at its heart – the science of collecting and interpreting the sounds of nature. Huawei was able to use their expertise in the areas of telecommunications hardware, Cloud and AI to help create an innovative solution to the problem. Our target audience was Huawei consumers and potential customers worldwide. Describe the execution Rainforest Connection and Huawei created an ecosystem of technology that listens to the sounds of the rainforest. Recycled Huawei cellphones are the ears of the system. They are placed high in the rainforest canopy in weatherproof, solar powered boxes. These ‘Huawei Guardians’ transmit data to the cloud 24/7 in real-time, where an AI algorithm can pick out the calls of spider monkeys. This information is used to create distribution maps that more effectively directs conservation efforts – which in turn will benefit all the animals that inhabit the rainforest. List the results Huawei Guardians currently monitor 2,500 sq km, processing bio-acoustic data 24-hours a day using recycled Huawei phones and their smart ecosystem of AI, the Cloud and cell tower fabrication. There are also Huawei Guardians monitoring rainforests in Sumatra, Cameroon, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil that have helped sequester more than 6.5m metric tonnes of CO2.
