He's collecting it for his lmuget, a ceremony that celebrates his passage from warrior to junior elder. Much prized by the moran, the bark will be used during the cooking of livestock slaughtered at sunrise by the warriors. This ceremony signifies the warriors' metamorphosis; having spent 13 years as a moran, those in his age group now move forward to the next stage of their lives. The Samburu have many myths and legends that are shared at such ceremonies. I learned then why they refer to themselves as loikop, which implies that they are the owners of the Earth. The Samburu believe they came from the planet Venus, and that God created a ladder and invited them to climb down. It terminated on planet Earth, the new world God had created especially for them.
