The obvious reason is straightforward; open source tools express an open and interoperable language. The code-based nature of the identity system allows dotdot designers to use SVG animation and pattern generators, and the functional simplicity of the mark democratizes the brand by inspiring consumers to create the logo using SMS.In designing a logo for language, we tried to reflect how language lives. Language is evolving and is not fixed. We created a series of speculative designs to push the conversation of what dotdot could inspire in the future: an ambidextrous tape dispenser; an autonomous shuttle; and a truly open house. CampaignDescription Dotdot is inspired by the original universal language — Morse code. It is unlike conventional logos that live as JPG or EPS files, and exists as a mark crafted and rendered in code, living in a GitHub repository. The :|| logo can be typed in SMS using three keystrokes — a single colon with two vertical bars on your keyboard, freeing the design from the limitations of traditional brand expression and democratizing its use. In the lock-up, the mark exists as an Emoji-like emphasis to the right of the word mark. The word mark is constructed from open source letterforms courtesy of the Google Fonts initiative. The accessibility and usability of the logo makes this new IoT design language true to dotdot’s ambition to be open and accessible to everyone. Outcome After the unveiling of dotdot at CES 2017 in January, zigbee alliance members reported the largest request for new orders and a groundswell of positive interest from a range of businesses across the IoT spectrum. The zigbee alliance witnessed a 110% increase in site traffic, a 30% increase in Twitter followers and over 100k brand impressions across social media, despite CES hyper saturation. Most importantly, the open source identity for dotdot created a new vocabulary for the IoT that simply hasn’t existed before. Synopsis The zigbee alliance is a global membership of over 400 tech firms, that creates universal standards for products transforming the way we live, work, and play. Though responsible for a sizable portion of the Internet of Things (IoT), including mesh networks and appliance certifications, the alliance was nearly invisible when compared to the WiFi Alliance or Bluetooth SIG, and other new competitors in the mesh networks space.The zigbee alliance needed a flagship brand that could punch above its weight and re-establish the alliance as the leading global IoT player. Dotdot is their new code language which aims to bring together connected home products and help them work in sync. The alliance needed a design system as identifiable as the Bluetooth symbol, both universal and open as the language itself. Strategy The objective was to create a universal system, beyond merely a global identity program. For manufacturers, the logo needed to be implemented on small silicon chips via printing or on larger industrial parts with a router or injection mold. This placed a tactical constraint on form factor and complexity. For developers, the system takes inspiration from the sandbox — the idea that the mark, like a code snippet, can be accessible and interpreted and re-imagined by a larger community of practitioners. Lastly, consumers at the end of the value chain needed a telegraphic and accessible mark that could become the shorthand for a simplified IoT. They can reproduce the mark via SMS using three keystrokes :||.The dotdot strategy adhered to a light-centered value proposition. This provided a steer for a high contrast visual scheme, and halftone patterns that echoed the effects of light dappling on surfaces.
