Its large, fur-lined paws act as snowshoes, and its thick furry tail, nearly the same length as its body, provides not only balance but also a warm scarf. Both are perfect adaptations to life in the extreme. For these solitary creatures, rock overhangs are a kind of “social media” space. The animals habitually visit these stony areas, rubbing their cheeks against them and leaving scent marks, to let other snow leopards know of their presence. Placing camera traps at these particular spots helps us get a glimpse into the world of the “shaan,” the local Ladakhi word for these feline ghosts. #InternationalSnowLeopardDay
