In order to seek safety, Hondurans in this neighborhood and beyond migrate north toward Mexico and the United States. As a result, schools often suffer from low enrollment and underfunding as well as being a recruitment ground for gangs. Despite these challenges, many are working to rebuild La Rivera’s sense of community, to make it a safer place for children and adults alike.
