@ conservationorg @ thephotoseciety @ photography.for.good # climatechange # 姆博罗罗 # 土著 # 乍得
Photo by @amivitale / This is the extraordinary Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim amid a herd of cattle in the village of Gouwa, Chad. Hindou is a member of the Mbororo pastoralist community and a leader. The nomadic Mbororo travel during the wet season, following the rains from south to north. Groups of several dozen relatives, including children and elders, travel on foot, donkey or camel, and stay at each grazing spot for only a couple of days. This region is grappling with the effects of climate change. Lake Chad, a critical water resource, has shrunk 90% since 1980, due in part to rising temperatures. The seasons themselves are also changing, with extreme rain and flooding as well dryness between the seasons. Water resources that used to exist no longer do. @hindououmar is working to harness ancient knowledge about the land and the weather to adapt. HIndou says, “For centuries, Indigenous peoples have protected the environment, which provides them food, medicine, and so much more. Now it’s time to protect their unique traditional knowledge that can bring concrete solutions to implement sustainable development goals and fight climate change.”Follow @amivitale and @rippleeffectimages for more photography celebrating women working to address the world's most pressing issues.@conservationorg @thephotosociety @photography.for.good #climatechange #mbororo #indigenous #chad
