At the time of this species’ discovery in the mid 1800s, it was common to name a species for a king, a queen, or a member of the nobility. Irritated by this practice, Napoleon’s nephew Charles Lucien Bonaparte, a staunch republican, named this species respublica to honor the republic and not royalty.
