案例简介：Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto / When most people see photographs of these paintings they assume they are from Western Australia. But these are Esplanade-style polychrome paintings from Arizona. The style of rock art is known from only 25 sites, all in the remote corners of Mojave County. With their elongated bodies and attention to detail, the figures depicted are both intriguing and not well studied. This painting style is thought to have arisen in the late archaic period 4,000 years ago. However, rock art is notoriously hard to date and the images could either be much older or much younger. We don’t know what the figures represent. We don’t know why they are painted in such detailed x-ray style. But not knowing does not stop the appreciation of the skill of the artist and the time invested in making them. I made these images as part of my nonprofit Ancient Art Archive.
