Photo by @lynseyaddario / A team of critical care nurses and doctors lift a COVID-19 patient to a seated position at Royal Papworth Hospital, outside Cambridge, England, on June 15. As part of physical therapy and to facilitate breathing, some long-term COVID-19 patients are turned and eventually aided to sit upright for several hours each day, in order to rebuild strength after months in intensive care. An ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body—which essentially does the job of the lungs externally, in order to give the body a chance to rest and recover. Royal Papworth is one of only five hospitals in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure. One year and over 112,000 deaths into the coronavirus pandemic, the United Kingdom has one of the highest COVID-19 death tolls per one million population in the world. The government is one of the world's leaders in the race to vaccinate citizens, with more than 12 million vaccinated already, roughly 23% of the adult population, according to Gov.uk and the Office of National Statistics.
