Maybe I will not see her again.” He finally made it after waiting 5 hours as Ukrainians were allowed to cross the border, while he and his black colleagues were not. Amoakohene also noted other examples of the extreme racism he faced while in Ukraine such as people refusing to sit next to him on the bus or holding their nose when they walked by him.Recently, I spent time making photographs and recording the stories of people fleeing war in Ukraine. Our National Geographic team set up a makeshift portrait studio outside a high school sports hall in Przemyśl, a small Polish town close to Ukraine’s border, where we met some of the thousands of people who have arrived in Poland since the Russian invasion started.
