In October I visited Glacier National Park, in Montana, during the season’s first cold snap. The summer crowds had dispersed, and I found myself alone among a sea of golden aspens. The park's 20 tree species include ancient western hemlock, western red cedar, subalpine fir, Engelmann spruce, and whitebark pine.
