Mary was born in 2016, the same year that war in South Sudan forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes and the Bidibidi refugee settlement started growing in northern Uganda. Over decades of war, South Sudanese have been forced back and forth between their home and Uganda. With more than 230,000 people, Bidibidi is one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. The COVID-19 pandemic made life more difficult for many of the families who’ve been living in Bidibidi. Schools closed, and markets could no longer import food from nearby cities. In late 2020, life slowly began to get back to normal.
