It had been hanging around the Zackenberg Research Station all week, mostly sleeping, eating grass, and being pestered by ravens. The tundra experience is transformed when a polar bear appears; it requires constant vigilance and careful route planning to avoid conflict. Opened in 1995, the station is owned by the Greenland government and operated by Aarhus University in Denmark (@auarctic). In the 1990s, polar bears were rarely if ever seen around here during the summer, but their visits are increasingly common as sea ice continues to decline.
