Photo by @lynseyaddario | Sean Kill, the foreman at Stoneman Funeral Service, does the final preparations on a coffin of a victim of COVID-19. The funeral home, just south of London, in Surrey, England, had roughly 35 other coffins filled with virus victims. For more than eight weeks, the service's employees handled almost double the average amount of funerals. They came close to running out of coffins, and had to find makeshift storage methods to accommodate the deceased, including clearing out two garages normally used for hearses. Many funeral directors and employees at funeral homes across England have expressed frustration with care homes, hospitals, and mortuaries, which don't always divulge whether a person has passed away with COVID-19, because they are legally not obliged to do so—even though this may put those who work with the deceased at increased risk of exposure. As a result, many funeral directors have been treating every death as if it were COVID+, and don the appropriate PPE while preparing the dead for burial. The United Kingdom was one of the last countries in Europe to decide on a nationwide lockdown, and it now is suffering one of the worst death rates in the world, with the official government toll at over 41,000 deaths.
