Last year Washington had significant snowfall through the previous winter but a combination of an unusually dry March and April and a devastating, record-breaking heat wave in June severely impacted its glaciers. During the heat wave, areas on Mount Rainier reached over 90°F (32°C), melting the snowpack, with a loss of two and half feet (just under a meter) in just five days.
