The scientists were from the SETI Institute, which seeks to understand the origin of life in the universe. Its work has the glamour of science fiction but also involves rigorous research. I took this photo in the Atacama Desert’s Salar de Pajonales, where we camped in tin shacks, remnants of an abandoned mine, near a lake.
