案例简介：Photos by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto / About 36,000 years ago, talented artists made paintings in southern France's Chauvet Cave. The images remain evocative to this day. The paintings also recorded images of an ice age world that is lost to us, except for the fossil record. In France lions, mammoths, rhinoceroses, and giant deer roamed the landscape. What we know of these two animals—the woolly rhino (Coelodonta antiquitatis) and the Megaloceros (Megaloceros giganteus)—comes through the archaeological record. We have their bones but we really did not know what they looked like before the discovery of cave paintings like Chauvet. The Megaloceros’s large, fatty hump and the woolly rhino’s distinctive band survived only in artwork. I founded the nonprofit @ancientartarchive to preserve andshare the world’s oldest artwork -images of forgotten worlds like this. Follow me @salvarezphoto and @ancientartarchive for more.
