Photo by @maddiemcgarvey / People load school buses with food to distribute to families in Clay, West Virginia. There’s no Walmart in Clay. No grocery store, no retail, no easy transportation available in the county—but there is an extensive school bus network. Every morning and afternoon a fleet of 29 buses are sent out along the twisting mountain roads. Some routes can take three hours to complete. Bus drivers get to know the families along their routes and are often the first to notice if something goes awry at home. When the COVID-19 pandemic got serious in March and schools shut down, the county went into crisis mode trying to get food to students and families. Many are completely reliant on school meals, and without them wouldn’t be able to eat. So the week after schools closed, teachers, bus drivers, church members, and coaches all showed up at the high school to make sandwiches and pack meals for the students. They made 2,000 bagged meals and sent the drivers out on their regular routes, hoping to deliver the food to all the students who needed it. Soon after, they were able to secure funding to pack five-day meal boxes, and the delivery trips of food went out once a week. This has continued even as many students returned to school.@FeedingAmerica is the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that together provide food to more than 40 million people per year.
