Photo by @laurakmorton / Gulls eat from an overflowing trash can near the historic seafood stalls in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood in February. At the time, restaurants were allowed to offer only takeout, and the neighborhood gulls, known for stealing food from unsuspecting tourists, had quickly learned to pull food from trash cans full of takeout containers. California’s economy reopened on June 15, and restaurants are now allowed to serve indoors at regular capacity. Supported by @InsideNatGeo’s Emergency Fund for Journalists I have been working on a project on the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco’s main tourist destination, to document the economic issues created by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more from this story and photographs of people, places, and culture, follow along @laurakmorton.
