My trip 190 kilometers (118 miles) on the MacKensei River and the Arctic Ocean (and then back) alone was one of the most exciting and frightening experiences of my life. There was no cell connection and almost no traffic. I got caught in the fog, and the car skidded many times. I kept Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" on a loop. I'm not sure why I chose the song, but it helped me stay focused. When I got out of the car, my stomach dropped as I looked down through the ice. Since the road depended on weather and temperature, Canada opened a new highway, its first to the Arctic Ocean, in late 2017. This made the village of Tuktoyaktuk accessible year-round. The highway also has a scientific mission: A monitoring network along its route will be used for global permafrost and climate change research. Please follow @estherhorvath for polar stories.
