I don’t see myself anywhere else.” - Alejandro Ortega PicónAlejandro (Alex) Ortega Picón came to the United States when he was 11. Alex told me that his mother abruptly moved him and his brother to escape violence in his hometown. He had trouble fitting in at first. He was bullied and beat up. He learned English by watching cartoons, and eventually found his friends and his American identity in high school. Alejandro started college but had to drop out to support his family. DACA* helped him to find a job that allowed him to do so. Now Alex is an essential worker. He works 12-hour, sometimes 15-hour, shifts as a crane operator and driver. He moves freight onto trains, which deliver goods throughout the United States. When the pandemic hit, business picked up and some people began to take time off to protect themselves. Alejandro couldn’t afford to do that.Images: Alex, age six (courtesy Alejandro Ortega Picón); Alex stands by the rail yard where he works in Commerce, California; Alex walks with his girlfriend, Stephanie, at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia. The fig trees and the flowers of the gardens bring him back to his grandmother's ranch in Mexico; and Alex sits with his mother at her house.*Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) protects some undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from deportation. President Trump’s attempt to end DACA was blocked by the Supreme Court last year. President Biden signed an executive order to preserve the program.
